ClearToken and Consensys partner to bring 24/7 settlement infrastructure to wholesale markets
Cryptographic finality meets settlement finality: powerful, regulated infrastructure for the movement of money and assets on chain
London, 8 October 2026: ClearToken, the UK-based market infrastructure group for digital and traditional assets, and Consensys, the protocols and institutional infrastructure company, today announce a strategic partnership to help banks move tokenised assets and cash onto always-on infrastructure, with the legal certainty and controls wholesale markets require.
The partnership pairs two kinds of finality. Consensys brings cryptographic finality, the technical certainty that a transaction recorded on chain cannot be altered. ClearToken is designed to bring settlement finality, the legal certainty that a transfer of money or assets is final and irrevocable.
Markets never sleep. Post-trade infrastructure still does. A tokenised asset that can move 24/7 delivers little if it cannot clear, settle and be safeguarded on the same basis.
By combining market infrastructure being built inside the UK regulatory perimeter with proven, scalable and resilient blockchain technology, the two firms aim to give institutions a route to round-the-clock markets without compromising on control.
Key points
- Settlement around the clock: ClearToken CSD Limited is designed to enable eligible securities held at different banks to be tokenised and recognised as a single fungible instrument, under its Gate 2 approval in the Bank of England’s Digital Securities Sandbox. Working with ClearToken Depository Limited, the group’s FCA-authorised payment institution, the aim is to settle these on a delivery-versus-payment basis against cash, including fiat, tokenised deposits and stablecoins, 24/7.
- Interoperability: Consensys connects banks, brokers and asset managers across blockchain networks and financial market infrastructures in a safe, private and compliant manner.
- Technology and distribution: ClearToken will draw on Consensys for scalable, resilient tokenisation infrastructure, and for the wallets and client reach to bring tokenised assets to institutional clients and partners.
Ben Santos-Stephens, CEO of ClearToken Group, said: “Wholesale markets are embracing a diverse and growing ecosystem of networks and blockchains. Realising the full potential of that ecosystem depends on infrastructure that connects the banks, assets and ledgers already in use, and works across whichever networks institutions choose to distribute cash and assets to their clients. Consensys brings the technology and the institutional relationships to deliver that at scale. We are building the legal and clearing framework institutions need in order to rely on it.”
David Cunningham, President of Consensys, said: “Financial institutions and market infrastructures are moving to always-on operations, with tokenisation at the core. Consensys is delivering interoperability for bank-issued tokens globally, across multiple payment schemes and financial market infrastructures. ClearToken is building a regulated route to clearing and settlement on a 24/7/365 basis, subject to clearing authorisation by the Bank of England. Together, this enables our clients to operate around the clock, opening up new business opportunities and reducing risk.”
Mark Williamson, Chief Commercial Officer of ClearToken Group, said: “Our clients have asked for one thing above all: tokenisation that fits into how they already manage risk and collateral. Working with Consensys puts that within reach of banks, brokers and asset managers.”
